We watched one of the most original recent movies the other night - "Be Kind Rewind". I'm not going to give away the whole plot, but in a nutshell Jack Black and Mos Def, after accidentally erasing all the tapes in the video store they work at, recreate a whole slough of famous blockbuster movies. And they do it in a way that is so ridiculously simple, that it's genius. The movie was directed by Michel Gondry, who, if you're familiar with his stuff, uses almost sinfully simple techniques to create cinematic illusion and effects. He's done a handful of some of my most favorite movies, including "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", "Human Nature", "The Science Of Sleep" (which was kind of a dud), as well as a host of videos with Bjork, Beck, Lenny Kravitz, and others. In "Be Kind Rewind", the remade movies are called "Sweded" movies, which was Jack Black's attempt to explain the high price and long wait for movies (i.e. the movies had to be imported from Sweden). I've been wanting to see this. I thought it looked hilarious! "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is such a great movie. My neighbor whom I've never seen keeps seemingly avoiding me. Every time I hear their door close or see them pull up something happens and I've never seen thir face which reminds me of Elijah Wood in that movie. My sister has seen him/her several times on the weekends I'm out of town and in the afternoons while I'm at work and says it's a dude trying to pass for a chick. I almost caught a glimpse of them on their balcony tonight while I was walking Angel but she distracted me. I digress. I'll have to see this for sure now.
